Slightlydelic

Ha! Foolish Innocent Piglet band member Paula got in touch via this blog, reminding me that I had this photo in the box.

Behold Slightlydelic, favourite '90s band of the North West and Aberystwyth. They were great, if a touch Wonderstuff-like in sound. Two or three (or four) of their songs could've been massive hits if they'd ever found a decent manager or label.

This photo was taken in Preston, by the Corn Exchange (once a corn exchange, then a pub called The Corn Exchange - there was a much better pub in Preston called The Exchange where The Innocent Piglets would sometimes go to have a drink. It got very confusing).

Paula is second from the left. Ha ha! Couldn't you tell!?

I ran The Slightlys' (as they were called) fan club for a while, during the year when I'd been chucked out of uni. This was also the year I took to wearing Morrissey-esque glam shirts and being called a poof. This was, by a strange coincidence, around about the same time everyone else was getting into '60s retro fashions and, well, dance music. I was, as I remain, totally rubbish when it comes to that sort of thing.

Paula, it has to be said, was one of the most beautiful people I ever met in real life. Even with the scar on her chin (which I only remembered whilst typing this). Additionally, and rather cleverly, she lived in Manchester a good few years before I did.

Me and Paula have so much history it would be boring to go into here but suffice to say we spent a lot of time together in my formative pre-university days (and quite a bit afterwards, too), but lost touch. I think everyone assumed we were (or had been at one point) a couple. But we hadn't.

The lead singer of The Slightlys, Jon (on the left of the photo), and I went on to share a girlfriend. Of which more later... well, maybe not.

Oh my word - how I loved The Slightlys! I've spent the last few years searching for some stuff by them but haven't found anything - can you help??? I used to love that song they did called Charlotte but i only had it on tape. If anyone knows where I can get it I'd be eternally grateful if you could let me know. My email address is mack underscore nina at hotmail dot com. Many thanks.

I did A-level Physics with Paula at Runshaw college and was secretly in love with her for 2 years! I never told her but she probably guessed. I went to watch slightlydelic a few times and they were awesome! One song I remember was called 'Far from the Madding Crowd', anyone else remember that?

I dont know what made me think of the Slightlys all of a sudden and then thought Id have a google search. They were a top band - forgive me if Im wrong but I think I recall seeing them upstairs at the Adelphi and I definately recall seeing them at Worden Park Arts Centre in Leyland and that was a cracking night - I also bought the tape but dont know if anyone has their songs on CD...

I went to Runshaw too but I think Paula was a couple of years older than me so I think she'd left before I went there. My freinds sister was close to one of the band members and thats how I got to hear of em and then went along to see em.

It would be interesting to know what they are all up to now :)

Great band - saw them play at our university hall of residence (Tetley Hall, Leeds) in 1995. The social secretary there (John) liked them, so he booked them for our Easter Ball. I could be wrong, but it sounds like "Jimbo" might have been the one who first introduced us to their music, if he's who I think he is...?

I had a tape with a few tracks [courtesy of a bit of piracy - sorry!], not sure if it's still around - standouts for me were "Stupid", "Forever Aeroplane", "The Pig in Me" and the haunting "Charlotte". John got hold of a CD single too - might have been "Being Blown?" or perhaps that was another dream... ;-)

Wonder where they are now...

Cheers,
Mark

Does anyone remember Absence of Choice, they were a band from Runshaw College that supported Slightlydelic a few times and took a lot of inspiration from them. There is a myspace.

Behold the power of the Slightlys. I still have the tapes - I couldn't bear to chuck them out even though they're old and manky - and I keep meaning to transfer them to computer but never have the time. I remember seeing them at the New Ship on Watery Lane in Preston as well as the Lamb on Church Street and a couple of other venues.

How much of a fan was I? Let's just say my ebay id has always been "foreveraeroplane"
